Totally agree with both points. Also, in Japanese at least, there’s a “match the phonetic spelling to it’s symbols [match hiragana to katakana]).
But it doesn’t tell you what they mean so if you’ve forgotten it’s not super helpful.

I also cover with my hands because I tend to read at a way higher level than I can hear or speak at this point.

Definitely areas for improvement!
